  • Shifts

  • Please select the hours you wish to work.

Food vouchers will be provided if you work two consecutive shifts. Beer vouchers will be provided for those not working on bars.

  • Setup

We'll be on site from Sunday, moving equipment from storage, building the bars, taking beer deliveries, and setting everything else up.

We also need staff in the mornings (and Wednesday afternoon) to help get ready for opening - tidying around, making bars and stalls presentable, ensuring things are in the right place, prepping the admissions area, etc.

    Handover

On days we're open, shifts overlap to make changing staff over smoother.

    Preview

Before we fully open on Wednesday we have a preview hour for trade and sponsors plus beer judging for which we'll need staff to cover all areas.

    Open

We open at 17:00 on Wednesday and then at 11:30 for the next two days, closing at 22:30. On Saturday we open at 11:00 and close at 21:00.

    Peak

We especially need staff for the busier times on Friday and Saturday.

    Shutdown

After we finish serving drinks, we will still need staff to handle glass returns, token refunds etc. until all the customers have left.

    Takedown

After close on Saturday we start dismantling the bars etc, ready to pack and take away in the morning. Around midnight there's a staff party for anyone who's been able to help.

There'll be no beer left on Sunday, just hot drinks and sandwiches plus an evening social with free buffet and beer at the Gardeners Rest as a thank you for all your hard work on Friday 22 November.

    Full

We have enough staff for these shifts. Please consider other shifts or enjoying the festival! We recommend signing up early if you would like to volunteer next year.

  • Staff Party

  • By around midnight on Saturday, once sufficient progress has been made with takedown, it will be party time! We'll drink whatever's left, tuck into the free food and socialise!
  • Work Preferences

  • Beyond serving, there's much to do, so please let us know what you're up for and we'll do our best to get everyone into the best spot for them.

We may have to ask you to cover a job we are short of volunteers for. Some jobs may be oversubscribed and we can only ask you to stand as spare/relief.

Your flexibility is appreciated... and needed!

Training will be given wherever necessary (just ask if you are unsure of anything) so please select as many options as possible.

Most jobs will involve standing up for long periods, but rest breaks will be given.

Some jobs will be allocated earlier at our meetings on the third Tuesday of the month, 7:30pm at the Gardeners Rest. Please join us - everyone welcome!

  • Skills and Experience

  • Uniform

  • You should get a name badge (with just your first name and possibly last initial, unless you're a manager) and festival t-shirt to wear (and keep) to show you're staff.

Staff working outdoors can be loaned a uniform fleece.

Please provide your t-shirt size so we can order the right number of each.

  • Health and mobility

  • Staff Trip

  • All volunteers who've helped out are invited on our social trip to Nottingham on Saturday 9 November (leaving from outside the Old Queens Head at 10:30 and heading back at 18:00) as a thank you.

Details and booking sheets will be available in the staffing office during the festival. Staffing will need to take a £10 deposit for your seat but you'll get that back on the coach.

  • Working at the Festival

    Conduct

Like in any job, we ask for a certain standard of conduct from our staff. By filling out this staffing form you agree to abide by our guidelines on behaviour and on health and safety.

    CAMRA's Volunteers Charter

Steel City Beer & Cider Festival operates in accordance with CAMRA's Volunteers Charter (see below), which documents how as someone giving up our time to volunteer we should all receive the respect we deserve.

    Shifts

Please assume you will be working the shifts selected unless advised otherwise.

    IMPORTANT

If you cannot make a shift, or are going to be late, we don't mind but please either:

    • amend your form (using the link emailed to you) in advance or
    • on the day, let us know by phone ASAP.

It is very important to let us know as it causes a lot of problems if we don't know who to expect and can't plan accordingly.

    Public Transport

The nearest tram stop is Shalesmoor (Blue or Yellow route) and nearest bus stops are Nursery Street or Moorfields/Allen Street. See Travel South Yorkshire for timetables.

    Arrival

Head to the staffing office (through the door on your right by the footbridge and upstairs) to sign in. You may have to show your confirmation email to the door staff during festival opening hours, so please bring it with you or have it visible on your phone.

Once signed in you'll be asked to sign to say you've read the Festival Bar Rules and Health & Safety Briefing that you should have already received. Once you've collected your staff badge, t-shirt and glass, we'll allocate you a job.

  • CAMRA Volunteers' Charter

CAMRA recognises the importance of its volunteers in campaigning, building awareness and generating income. CAMRA's National Executive will endeavour to ensure that volunteers are valued, supported and treated with respect.

This Charter sets out the principles that underpin CAMRA's volunteering activities and that should be followed by all CAMRA members. It is a statement of values and is not intended to be a contract.

CAMRA volunteers are people who contribute their time, energy and skills to support CAMRA without payment. They are the lifeblood of the organisation. CAMRA believes that it is important that they enjoy any volunteering they undertake.

CAMRA volunteers have the right to say no to any activity that they do not wish to take part in or with which they feel uncomfortable.

    CAMRA's responsibility to volunteers

    • To make you feel welcome and appreciated and to treat you with respect.
    • To ensure that you can volunteer safely.
    • To enable you to work alongside people who share and support your interests.
    • To give you the chance to learn new skills and to be given training where relevant.
    • To offer you tasks that support CAMRA's aims.
    • To give you clear contacts for support and advice.
    • To be clear in what you are being asked to do.
    • To ensure that your opinion is welcomed and treated with respect.
    • To listen to and take seriously any concerns you may have.

    Responsibilities of CAMRA volunteers

    • To work together to achieve CAMRA's aims and objectives.
    • To be clear about what commitment you can give.
    • To try to give reasonable notice if you are unable to fulfil that commitment.
    • To be prepared to be flexible.
    • To adhere to CAMRA's policies, procedures and legal requirements.
    • To avoid any actions that would bring CAMRA into disrepute.
    • To inform the relevant CAMRA official (national, regional or local) of any problems and issues you encounter as a volunteer.
    • To ask for help and guidance when it is needed.
    • To respect other volunteers and staff.

    Problems

Although we hope that there will not be any problems or complaints, CAMRA has documented processes in place to help us deal with them effectively and fairly.

    Equal Opportunities

All activities performed under CAMRA's name need to comply with CAMRA's Equal Opportunities Policy, i.e. to treat everyone fairly regardless of gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, race, ethnic or social/economic background. This includes behaviour towards the public as well as towards other volunteers.
