North Derbyshire Pub of the Year presentation

A number of CAMRA members from across the area along with local pub regulars assembled at the Miners Arms in Hundall, near Dronfield, on Friday 7th July to celebrate the pub winning CAMRA’s North Derbyshire Pub of the Year award. CAMRA Regional Organiser Pete Boitoult presented the winners certificate and the whole cast of management and staff got behind the bar for the photo opportunity! A complimentary chilli and garlic bread supper was provided for all in attendance with a choice of hot or mild. We never asked if the chilli plants growing in the pub’s conservatory had been involved! The pub is a traditional rural village drinkers pub that attracts a wide cross section of customers and has a choice of areas to enjoy your drinks – the main bar area with sport on TV and background music, a quieter lounge area, pool table room, conservatory with sofas and beer garden. The Miners has a range of 5 real ales served on handpump. The two regular beers are Pictish Alchemist Ale and the locally brewed Drone Valley Dronny Bottom Bitter with an ever changing selection of guest beers on the other three pumps. On the presentation night these included Acorn Summer Ale and Sonnet 43 Raven Stout. The Miners also boasts an extensive range of traditional cider and perry with around 20 listed on the blackboard! There is a discount for Real Ale and Real Cider for CAMRA members of 30p off a pint or 15p off a half every day except Monday when the beer prices are available to everyone at a bargain price! A new feature on the bar is an extended gin selection with a range of around 15 available including the Sleeping Lemon Gin from the Wild Beer Company! The Miners also offers a selection of bar snacks including pork pies, bhajis, sausage rolls, flans etc supplied by Deli-Licious of Dronfield. The pub is dog friendly, having some pub dogs of its own as well as numerous customers that bring ‘guest dogs’, a cask of water can be found in the conservatory labelled ‘doggy beer’ and there is a vending machine selling doggy treats to raise money for charity. A limited bus service is available stopping directly outside the Miners Arms (TM Travel route 14 Dronfield-Chesterfield), otherwise it is walkable from Unstone or a short taxi ride from Dronfield town centre. The Miners Arms hosts two beer festivals a year with additional guest beers and music. The first is in early June as part of the wider Three Valleys Beer Festival and the other is August Bank Holiday weekend when other events in the village coincide including charity cricket matches and the Land Rover trials. Congratulations to team Miners for winning this award – beating off competition from other North Derbyshire pubs including our own entry, the Anglers Rest in Bamford – and we wish them good look in the next round of the competition against the other East Midlands winners. The pub that is judged the best in the East Midlands then goes into the national Pub of the Year competition. Andrew Cullen (Photo credit: Nick Wheat)

Pub of the Year presentation

It will have come as no surprise to many that Sheffield & District CAMRA members yet again voted the Kelham Island Tavern as their Pub of the Year for 2017. Branch members descended on the pub in their droves on the evening of 22 June to see our social secretary Patrick Johnson present pub owners Trevor Wraith and Lewis Gonda with their award. Kelham Island outside bar The presentation was timed to coincide with the start of the pub’s own annual midsummer festival, and it must be said there was a fantastic selection of real ales and ciders on offer. Unfortunately, as designated driver for the evening, I wasn’t able to sample as many as I would have liked! In total, there were more than 30 beers available, ranging from local breweries including Abbeydale and Blue Bee, to those a little further afield such as Shropshire’s Salopian Brewery and Brodie’s from East London. The outside bar also stocked a varied cider selection, mainly featuring orchards from the West Country. kelham island pizza There was also no danger of going hungry, as freshly made wood-fired pizzas were available courtesy of the Sunshine Pizza Oven. The pub also kindly put on a spread following the presentation of the certificate. Congratulations once more to Trevor, Lewis and all at the Kelham Island Tavern on being voted Sheffield & District Pub of the Year 2017.

Club of the Year presentation

On Saturday 17 June, several members from Sheffield & District CAMRA headed to the Stocksbridge RUFC clubhouse to present the Club of the Year award for 2017. The clubhouse was opened in 1985 when the rugby club took over a derelict chapel. Over the years it has become well-known in the area for its excellent selection of ales, and was thoroughly deserving of the accolade. IMG_5693 The presentation was timed to coincide with the club’s second annual beer festival. In addition to the four real ales usually on offer in the clubhouse, an extra eight handpumps had been installed outdoors featuring beers from local breweries including Acorn, Bradfield, Hilltop and White Rose.

June Pub of the Month presentation

Sheffield & District CAMRA members headed to the Broadfield on Abbeydale Road on Tuesday 13 June to celebrate the Pub of the Month award for June 2017. With its wide range of real ales (there were nine handpumps available on the night with the usual selection of True North ales plus guests), good food and relaxed atmosphere, the Broadfield was a worthy winner. The pub had last won the award in May 2015. Branch chairman Mick Saxton (right) presented Ed Daly, one of the pub’s managers, with the certificate, which we are sure will take pride of place.

Pub of the Month July 2017

We are pleased to announce that the Sheffield & District CAMRA Pub of the Month for July 2017, as voted for by our members, is the Wisewood Inn at Loxley. The Wisewood Inn was re-opened in its current guise in October 2015 by owner Steve Wesley and licensee Pete Hebb. They have managed to take a run-down establishment at a difficult time for the pub trade and completely turn it around in 18 months. Their vision was to create a suburban pub that sold great beer, offered an exciting food menu, hosted regular music events and appealed to a large customer base, and they have certainly managed to achieve all these. On the beer front, the Wisewood Inn is Cask Marque accredited and offers a wide range of cask, keg, bottled and canned ales. There are five handpumps installed, with three regular real ales available in Barnsley Bitter, Bradfield Farmers Brown Cow, and an Abbeydale pump. The remaining two pumps have seen guest beers from numerous local and national breweries, and since the re-opening there have been more than 200 different cask and keg ales on offer. The pub also has a fantastic beer garden, perfect for sitting outside and enjoying the view on a warm summer’s day. They are soon to start hosting regular barbecues, so be sure to watch out for those! Funds raised from many of the events hosted have been used to support local business and charities, so it’s all for a good cause. For those wanting to host their own celebrations, there is a cellar bar available for hire. Going forward, the owners are hoping to continue increasing their profile as a good real ale pub, and hopefully start to make it into Sheffield & District CAMRA’s annual Top 20 pubs of the year lists. They are also  planning to extend the kitchen to deal with increased demand, and there are rumours of the pub launching its own on-site micro-brewery, so watch this space! Steve and Pete would like to thank CAMRA, and all the members who voted for the Wisewood Inn  as their Pub of the Month. A huge mention also goes to the staff, suppliers and breweries who have been really supportive, but of course none of this would be possible without the customers who have returned to the pub and made it their regular. CAMRA members, don’t forget to vote for your next Pub of the Month. The list of current nominees can be found in Beer Matters and on our website, or if there’s a pub not on the list that you would like to see recieve some recognition, you can also nominate a pub. All votes and nominations can be made through our website, or at any branch meeting.

Ship Inn presented with National Design Award

The Ship Inn in Kelham Island was presented with its 2017 CAMRA Design Award on 31 May. Impressively, the pub has become only the fourth pub in Sheffield to receive one of these awards in almost forty years. The Ship has been nationally recognised for its iconic 19th century features and eccentric décor, and was one of only four pubs in the UK to win the accolade last year. The award itself was handed over to landlords Dean and Sally Smith and Lorraine Hakes (representing pub owners, Hawthorn Leisure) by our own Pub Heritage Officer, Dave Pickersgill, who had previously travelled to London on the pub’s behalf to collect the prize. Numerous Sheffield & District CAMRA members made the trip down to Kelham Island for the presentation, and they were treated to celebratory drinks and food, all of which was much appreciated! 023_Ship Sheffield CAMRA Award The pub’s design itself is an intriguing mixture of old and new. Concept Design, the company who masterminded the Ship’s aesthetic refurbishment, have blended contemporary design with carefully restored original features discovered by builders as they chipped away through the old paint and plaster. As for the atmosphere, Dean and Sally have turned the Ship into a welcoming and tranquil environment. Candlelit tables and subtle background music, combined with the excellent selection of real ales and food available, create a unique ambience that is not to be missed. “The Ship Inn is proof that change can be a positive thing. From a pub that at one time was a part off-licence with no ladies, to become a shining light for Kelham Island speaks for itself,” said Dean. Promising more to come, Dean disclosed future plans to add even more hand pulled beer and development of an outside space using shipping containers, to ensure the ongoing growth of the pub. “Everyone in this area pulls together to make it the special island it has become,” added Dave. “CAMRA are delighted with the entire effort in this small yet impactful community. Awarding the understated Ship Inn this prestige offers a representation of the area making it all that more appealing.”

District Pub of the Year presentation

On 20 May, several members of the Sheffield & District branch headed out into the Peak District for a chance to visit some of the less easy-to-reach hostelries in the area. As part of this, the group stopped in at the Anglers’ Rest in Bamford, where they presented the pub with its District Pub of the Season award. Congratulations to everyone from the Anglers Rest, who made us very welcome and fully deserved the accolade. May Pub of the Month presentation

On 9 May, Sheffield & District CAMRA members descended on the University Arms, Brook Hill, for the presentation of the Pub of the Month award for May 2017. The evening was a double celebration as the pub was also presented with its Asset of Community Value (ACV) certificate from the Department for Communities and Local Government. After a long campaign, the University Arms recently became the ninth Sheffield pub to receive the ACV accolade. Social Secretary Patrick Johnson (centre) presented pub manager Ashley Shephard (left) and bar manager Danny Vickers (right) with the awards, which we are sure will be displayed in pride of place for years to come!

Pub of the Month June 2017

Broadfield Our Pub of the Month awards are voted for by our members and are designed not as a competition between pubs as such, more to celebrate those pubs and bars around our area that serve great real ale in a friendly and comfortable atmosphere, day in, day out. This month’s winner, The Broadfield on Abbeydale Road, was built in the 1890s in the heart of Sheffield’s Antiques Quarter. In 2011, it became part of what is now the True North brewery. The pub was refurbished in 2012 and since then it has strived to serve quality ales and good food in a friendly atmosphere. The Broadfield last won our Pub of the Month award in May 2015. There are nine cask ales available, including three regular True North beers alongside Abbeydale Moonshine, plus five guest ales. The beer garden is a delightful place to enjoy a pint or two on a warm summer’s day. Alongside the beers, a wide selection of whiskies and gins are also offered, and the food menu includes award-winning pies and sausages, and everyone’s favourite – a proper Sunday roast. We are heading to the Broadfield to present their certificate on Tuesday 13 June from 8pm, and everyone is welcome to come and join us for a celebratory pint. The pub can be found at 452 Abbeydale Road, Sheffield, S7 1FR. Buses 10, 10a, 75, 76, 86, 96, 97, 98 and 218 will all get you there. CAMRA members, don’t forget to vote for your next pub of the month! This can be done either through our website or at any branch meeting.

Club of the Year 2017

We are pleased to announce that Stocksbridge RUFC has won this year’s Club of the Year award. As well as the rugby, the clubhouse hosts regular events and has become well known in the area for the quality of beer available. The bar offers three regular real ales; Hobgoblin, Bradfield Farmer’s Blonde and Farmer’s Brown Cow. Seasonal Bradfield brews are also available. Last year saw the club host its first ever beer festival, which is set to return this year. The festival will see eight additional real ales on offer. The presentation of the award has been timed to coincide with the beer festival on Saturday 17 June. Sheffield & District CAMRA members are invited to come along from 4pm onwards for a presentation around 5pm. Of course, if you’re keen why not head down a bit earlier and sample some of the many beers on offer! Stocksbridge RUFC can be found at 634 Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, Sheffield, S36 1DY. Bus 57 from Sheffield will get you to within a couple of minutes’ walk of the ground. You can also use the SL1/SL1a Supertram link buses departing from Middlewood tram terminus.
