Black Friday returns to the Devonshire Cat on 23 November. This celebration of dark beer will feature a range of high ABV stouts and porters. The new Brass Monkey micropub on Middlewood Road now has an online presence, which says the pub is “coming soon”. The Two Sheds micropub, located in the former Iberico Cafe in Crookes, opened for business on Friday 28 September. It offers four cask and four keg lines, plus a bottle shop. The Chapeltown Tap House & Gin Bar is now open for business. The pub has five cask lines and is offering a 50p per pint discount for CAMRA members on Mondays. Mitchell’s Hop House are not currently brewing, but the wine shop is still open. Refurbishments are still underway at the Masons Arms in Crookes, although a reopening date does appear to be ever closer. The New Inn on Hemsworth Road is currently closed and Star Pubs are advertising for a new licensee. The infamous Roger & Out beer is set to return to the Frog and Parrot on Division Street and will be brewed by Dead Parrot. It is not yet known how much of a resemblance it will have to its previous incarnation. The Pointing Dog on Ecclesall Road is set to reopen as a Victorian-themed cocktail bar.

Pour is set to become the latest addition to the Heeley Triangle and Sheffield’s craft beer scene. The new bar (previously an Italian restaurant) is next door to the White Lion and will feature up to eight craft keg lines and a range of vegan and vegetarian pizzas. The owners – Jon Terry from the White Lion, HopJacker brewer Edd Entwistle and chef Simon Naylor – hope to open some time in October. The Shepley Spitfire at Totley, currently a Greene King managed pub, is set to become a leased pub in November. The Olde Mustard Pot in Midhopestones, the most northerly pub in our branch region, is currently closed. In Stocksbridge, the Silver Fox on Manchester Road has reopened after a period of closure. Work is still ongoing at the King & Miller in Deepcar, which was purchased earlier this year by Bradfield Brewery as their second tap pub. The Ale House on Fraser Road is hosting an American whiskey night on Saturday 24 November, which will feature a selection of rye and bourbon whiskeys with matched food pairings. Contact the pub for more details. Barrowboy on Abbeydale Road is now open, serving Korean bao buns and other street food. No cask ale is available but Abbeydale Heathen (4.1%) features on keg. The Old Crown on London Road has reopened but on our correspondent’s visit there was no real ale on offer. Thor’s Tipi Bar in the Peace Gardens is set to make its annual reappearance on Tuesday 20 November, where it will remain until New Year’s Eve. There will be a cask takeover featuring seven beers from Almasty Brewery at Shakespeares on Thursday 18 October from 5pm. Wander Beyond Brewing will also be taking over seven keg lines at the same time.

Hop Hideout on Abbeydale Road have a couple of interesting events coming up. The last weekend in October sees a tap takeover from New Mills’ Torrside Brewery, while the second weekend in November will be the shop’s 5th birthday celebration, featuring 5 Bill Murray-inspired beers and a Bill Murray fancy dress party. DinoSours returns to the Rutland Arms on Brown Street from 12-15 September following the success of last year’s event. Two cask and six keg sours will be available. The Sentinel Brewhouse has reverted to its previous opening hours and as such is no longer open on Mondays or Tuesdays. Barrowboy on Abbeydale Road is set to open before the end of August. So far it is unclear where real ale will be available. The new Pitcher & Piano on Holly Street now has an official opening date of Friday 19 October.

The Stag’s Head on Psalter Lane recently underwent a bar upgrade and now has eight handpumps installed. These are mostly Thornbridge beers but on our last visit there was also a guest ale from Tiny Rebel. The Bar Stewards on Gibraltar Street is set to celebrate its first birthday on 28 July with a party including street food, music and a range of special beers. The Church House on St James Street is hoping to reopen on 20 August following refurbishment and building repairs. Church – Temple of Fun on Rutland Way is the latest addition to the Kelham Island beer scene. The new venture from Bring Me the Horizon frontman Oli Sykes features a 100% vegan bar, including an unfined cask ale and a range of craft keg and cans. There is also vegan food from Make No Bones and a range of classic video arcade games. A new café bar is heading to Nether Edge, with a grand opening on 28 July. Brewer & Hop (40 Wostenholm Road) will feature craft beers, ales, gins and cocktails and is part of the Dalbury Hotel complex. Hathersage Social Club is hosting a “Praise Be to Beer” supper night on 3 August in collaboration with Abbeydale Brewery. The four-course meal will be served with matched beers and costs £32.50 for food only, or £45 with the tasting flight. The Old Queens Head on Pond Hill has introduced a new weekday lunchtime menu, with all dishes priced at £3.50 between noon and 3pm. Stancill Brewery have submitted a planning application to Sheffield City Council to transform the former HSBC building in Chapeltown into a pub. This could be the second new pub to open in Chapeltown in the near future, along with the proposed new micropub in the former Marie’s Tea Rooms. Residents have put in a number of complaints against Hawthorn Leisure’s application for a late license for the former Edward’s pub on Glossop Road. The bar is currently being transformed into the Swinging Sinatra’s bar and was proposed to open until 2am on weekdays and 3am on weekends. A new bar from the Marston’s-owned Pitcher & Piano chain is set to open on Holly Street in September this year. It is assumed that real ale will be available as it is in most of the existing pubs in the chain in other cities. Hop Hideout on Abbeydale Road is holding a celebration of sour beer over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

The Old Mother Redcap in Bradway is now closed again after the new management couple were ousted by Sam Smith’s brewery. An application has been made to Sheffield City Council by Hawthorn Leisure for extended opening hours at Edward’s bar on Glossop Road. The venue, which has seen several reincarnations in recent times, would also be re-branded as Sinatra’s under the plans. The Shakey in Hillsborough reopened on 7 June following a comprehensive refurbishment. Woody’s bar on West Street offered cask Abbeydale Moonshine over the recent Spring Bank Holiday Weekend. It isn’t clear whether there are plans to continue serving real ale. The Church House on St James Street is set to close for a few weeks after Tramlines weekend for essential building maintenance. The interior will also be given a full renovation. Plans have been submitted for a new micropub in a former children’s craft café at 185 Middlewood Road, S6 4HD. It is hoped the pub will be open in time for Tramlines weekend. The proposed new micropub in the former Iberico Café in Crookes has hit a setback after objections were raised over disabled accessibility. Walkley Beer Co is hosting a takeover from Leeds-based North Brewery on Friday 6 July, with cask, keg and canned beers on offer.

The Blind Monkey at Walkley had its grand opening on 27 April and has proved popular so far. The pub will be the venue for our branch meeting on 3 July. Huttons Bar on West Street is to become Molly Malone’s, an Irish-themed bar, opening in September in time for the new University year. The Drink Inn on Commercial Street has been closed for some time, and although there has been no definite announcement either way it appears the pub is no longer trading. The Green Room on Devonshire Street now has a comedy club run in conjunction with Last Laugh in the newly built function room; the first one took place on 2 May. The Lescar on Sharrow Vale Road still has its weekly Last Laugh comedy night every Thursday. There is a new film night at the New Barrack Tavern, starting with Quadrophenia on 15 May. The first beer from the new Dead Parrot Beer Company has been spotted on Sheffield’s handpumps. The brewery is owned by Mark Simmonite, formerly the owner of Henry’s Bar in the city centre. Another new Sheffield brewery, Hopscotch, was granted its Alcohol Wholesaler license on 8 May. The Walkley (formerly the Walkley Club) on Lark Street has now closed. Planning permission has been submitted for a new micropub at Arch 2A, Ecclesfield Road, Chapeltown. The Cross Scythes at Totley is set to reopen on 11 May under new management following a refurbishment. On Bank Holiday Monday, 7 May, old regulars of the still-closed Old Mother Redcap in Bradway gathered in the pub’s beer garden with drinks and snacks to demonstrate that they still miss the pub. Samuel Smith’s continue to look for a management couple to run the pub. The Old Club, situated in the former Polish Club on Ecclesall Road, opened for business on 6 May. Loxley Brewery recently released their third beer, Wisewood Three, a traditional Yorkshire bitter (3.9%).

From 9 April, the Sentinel Brewhouse on Shoreham Street will have extended opening hours: Mon-Thu 4pm-11pm, Fri 12pm-12am, Sat 11am-12pm, Sun 11am-8pm. The Blind Monkey (formerly the Firwood Cottage) has a revised opening date of 27 April. The Masons Arms in Crookes is currently being redecorated and signs are that the pub could reopen soon. Planning permission has been granted for the conversion of the Iberico Cafe into a micropub. Meanwhile, plans have also been approved for the opening of a new bar on Ecclesall Road. The Old Club will be located in the former Polish centre. The proposed new microbrewery in the old dairy on Broadfield Road is no longer going ahead. The Bulls Head at Fulwood has reopened having been taken over by Heather, who was previously at the Springvale on Commonside. Little Critters’ tenure at the Fox and Duck in Broomhill is set to come to an end, but the brewery will retain the lease of the Doctor’s Orders on Glossop Road.

The Norfolk Arms on Dixon Lane now sells real ale at weekends. Two casks are available from Thursday and are available until sold out. The Queens Ground in Hillsborough has installed a fourth hand pump. Edward’s on Glossop Road remains closed but there are indications it could reopen in the near future under a new guise. The Brown Bear on Norfolk Street closed suddenly last month but has since reopened under new management. Work has begun and licenses have been agreed for a disused public toilet block on Blonk Street to be converted into a cafe and micropub serving real ales. The new owners of the Farfield Inn on Neepsend Lane have confirmed their intention to return the building to its former usage as a pub, although not in the immediate future. The Masons Arms in Crookes and the Old Crown on London Road both remain closed at the time of writing, with no news on the future of either. The Tramshed at Meersbrook has expanded into the neighbouring unit and is now serving a range of craft beers.

The Farfield Inn on Neepsend Lane recently sold at auction for £250,000 – more than two-and-a-half-times its guide price. The buyer is reported to be an individual with experience of pub ownership in Sheffield. The site of the former Botanical pub on Ecclesall Road is currently being refurbished and is set to re-open as a late-bar named the Three Monkeys. The Blind Monkey in Walkley, formerly the Firwood Cottage, has announced that it intends to be open in time for the Easter weekend. The Mason’s Arms in Crookes has closed following the departure of the landlord. The future of the building remains unclear. New landlords have taken over the Three Merry Lads on Redmires Road, Lodge Moor. An offer of £2.95 per pint on all cask ales has been introduced for CAMRA members. The Dog and Partridge on Trippet Lane has a new guest kitchen and is now open 7 days a week. Olu from the Wing Kings will be serving up a selection of chicken wings, waffles, traditional pub food and desserts. The owners of the Iberico Cafe in Crookes have submitted a planning application to convert the business into a micropub. A decision is due by March 23. Prices at the Bradfield Brewery tap at the Nags Head, Stacey Bank, are set to increase from £2 per pint to £2.30 on all cask ales. A new Marston’s pub has opened on Chaucer Road, S5, under the Generous George brand. The Eight Foot Way will serve a selection of five rotating real ales and has an extensive food menu. The Bull’s Head in Ranmoor is currently closed. There are plans to reopen the venue as a gastropub. A planning application has been submitted to the council to build a new microbrewery in a unit in the Old Dairy on Broadfield Road. The Church House on St James Street is opening a fully soundproofed rehearsal and recording space upstairs at the end of February. The pub, which hosts live music every weekend, has also expanded its range of real ales and now features three regular beers from national breweries plus one local guest ale. The Tap & Tankard on Cambridge Street closed its doors for the last time on 3 February. The new Loxley Brewery, based at the Wisewood Inn, has had its brewing vessels delivered and hopes to start production in the near future. The brewery also now has a logo, an Instagram account and a Facebook page.

Enterprise Inns have withdrawn their appeal against the ACV listing of the Cherry Tree on Carter Knowle Road ahead of a planned hearing in late February. The withdrawal of the appeal means that the pub’s status as a community asset will stand for the next five years. The Beehive on West Street is to close for a couple of weeks in early February for a refurbishment. The Washington on Fitzwilliam Street has introduced early evening (until 9pm) drinks promotions on weekdays including house ale for £2.50 a pint. During January this is extended to the full opening hours (6pm to 2am) Monday to Thursday. Live music and DJs continue to be a regular feature, especially at the weekend and a new special event is a video games tournament. They continue to offer 5 real ales. The Blue Ball at Wharncliffe Side recently received perfect scores from Cask Marque on all three of its cask lines. A further two real ales are set to be installed in the near future. The Fox and Duck in Broomhill has expanded its food offerings, with a selection of traditional pub meals available in addition to burgers. Shakespeares on Gibraltar Street is holding a “Stupidly Delicious Beers” event on Friday 2 February. Cask ales include a Toblerone stout from Beer Ink and a raspberry and salted caramel milk stout from Fallen Brewing. New landlords are set to take over at the Bull’s Head on Fulwood Road. Half of the pub will concentrate on food but the other half will remain dedicated to drinkers. The Crosspool Tavern on Manchester Road and the Moorlands at Owler Bar, both formerly Crown Carveries, have now reopened under new Stonehouse Pizza & Carvery branding. Old Hall Brewery in Snaith, near Goole, have appointed Ryan Truswell as their new head brewer. He has previously worked at Elland Brewery and Heineken UK.
