Welbeck Abbey Brewery
Here at Welbeck Abbey Brewery we’re elated to announce that our first pub, The Portland House, is currently being planned, prepped and polished ready for opening in August.
Situated on Ecclesall Road in Sheffield, our little boozer will be entirely dedicated to ethically sourced food and drink with provenance; a fine balance between the heritage that comes with being part of the Welbeck Estate and the contemporary, industrial style that is synonymous with Sheffield.
Heading up our newest venture will be no other than esteemed General Manager Tom Purcell previously of the University Arms, Sheffield.
On the bar you’ll find a selection of Welbeck Abbey beer and also guest ales that we source from fellow brewers’ far and wide. With 6 hand-pulls, a selection of continental keg products plus lots of delicious spirits, wine and bottled beer we believe there really will be something for everyone. We’re very proud of our newest venture and we invite you all to come and visit us upon opening.
Brewery Tours are still running on the second Monday of each month and the final tour will commence on Monday 14th September. Head brewer and one of few Brewster’s in the UK, Claire, takes you on a sensory journey and explains the brewing process from grain to pint. Tours start at 7:30pm and finish around 9pm costing just £7.50 per person. Tickets are available from the Welbeck Farm Shop or by contacting the brewery direct on 01909 512539. We look forward to seeing you.
In other news we’re sponsoring the Roman Southwell Community Archaeology project and have brewed a beer with volunteers from the group in order to raise money for this great cause. The beer is called Gladiator and drinks at 3.8% ABV. Brewed with pale malts and entirely English hops for grassy notes and floral balance- we can all help raise money with 10 pence of each pint going straight to the charity to increase funds for their next stage in the dig. To find out more about the group, charity and Roman activity in Southwell visit their website: www.mbarchaeology.co.uk. Southwell food and drink pub The Hearty Goodfellow is heading up the campaign for us and this is one of the fine establishments where you will be able to do your bit in keeping history alive, whilst supping a delicious pint of English ale.
On the not so distant horizon are a couple of items that we’re rather chuffed with at brewery HQ. Firstly we’re ecstatic to say that Welbeck Abbey keg lager Pivo will soon be coming to a pub near you! Brewed using Czech and Polish hops this 4.8% ABV crisp, clean, thirst quenching lager will be available very soon so keep your eyes peeled. Finally we’ve had a bash at brewing a beer in the style of a Belgian Dubbel , which we’ll be maturing in ex. wine casks in the tunnels that run underneath the abbey here at Welbeck. We’re looking to achieve between 6-7% ABV for this rich, dark libation.
Upcoming Monthly Specials for July are out and about in a pub near you very soon:
