Inn Brief & Beery Bits

Inn Brief In addition to the Castle at Bolsterstone, John and Tracy, have recently also taken on the Green Dragon at Thurgoland. They have been at the Castle for some months and have built up, what was, a declining trade. Three handpumps are in use on a daily basis, usually including beer from Bradfield and Robinsons. The new managers at the Castle Inn, Bradway are Mark & Gillian. Abbeydale Moonshine is now the regularly available beer, usually alongside Bradfield Farmers Blonde and a guest bitter. Food is now available again served Tuesday to Saturday 12:00-15:30 and 17:00-20:30 plus Sunday lunches served 12:00-15:00. Live music features one Saturday a month and there may be a second entertainment night added per month soon. The Angel at Holmesfield now has four beers on handpump: The two regulars are Abbeydale Moonshine and Chatsworth Bakewell Best Bitter. These are backed up by two guest ales. At time of visit these were “Wards” Best Bitter and Wychwood Hobgoblin Gold. The Horse & Jockey at Unstone has introduced real ale, at last report this was Timothy Taylors Boltmaker at a bargain introductory price of £2.20 a pint. The Inn at Troway now has a guest beer alongside the Thornbridge offerings, with the latest guest at time of writing being Bradfield Farmers Brown Cow. The Peacock at Owler Bar has reopened following a minor refurbishment. A framed document on the wall of the Palm Tree, Walkley lists the landlords of the pub from Joseph Smith in 1856 to David Harrison 2000 to 2015. Jo now runs the pub and David who lives nearby still calls in. The pub is open plan with a neat and tidy beer garden and play area at the back and a smoking area at the front and is child and dog friendly. On Palm Street the pub is served by the number 52 and 95 bus routes. Jo says she will continue with free snooker on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday is open mic night with a light buffet provided. Saturday there is live music in the evening and Sunday is Fun Day. Tetley Bitter and Farmer’s Blonde are on the bar at a very reasonable price. The Ball Inn, Crookes has had the old wooden decking replace with stone flags and a stylish stainless steel and glass surround. Having 14 hand pumps there is always a good choice of beers and ciders. The Red Deer on Pitt Street, Sheffield City Centre, has increased the discount offered on pints of real ale to card carrying CAMRA members to 10%. Confirmation of news from the Wellington at Shalesmoor is still awaited at the time of going to press. It will soon be under new ownership. Watch this space! Work has finally started on the refurbishment of the Ship Inn at Shalesmoor, following a period of closure since Greene King Brewery sold the pub to the pub company that now owns it. It is expected that the refurbishment will be a simple and sympathetic one, preserving the character of the pub but making it a bit less ‘worn out’. A date for reopening hasn’t yet been announced but it is expected to be late September. Beery Bits North Union Brewing Co, the beer business set up by Iain Kenny who previously brewed for Kelham Island Brewery, may soon be getting premises! Currently North Union is cuckoo brewing at Harthill and selling only bottled beers, however Iain is looking at moving his own brewery into a railway arch near the Victoria Hotel in Sheffield and expanding into craft keg. Worksop and Retford Brewery – Local Sheffield CAMRA members, Dave Pickersgill and John Stocks are giving their illustrated talk, ‘The Worksop and Retford Brewery,’ at Worksop Library on Wednesday 16th.September @ 14:00. Exit 33 Brewing

Exit 33 Brewing are introducing a new range of special beers under the banner Club 33.  ‘The idea for the beer series came from our recent trip to the Oregon Brewers Festival in Portland after a brew day with Lucky Lab Brew Co.  We love playing with recipes and brewing one offs specials. The Club 33 beers will never be repeated and will always be full on in terms of flavour’ The much-awaited return of our strong beer Citra SMaSH is due at the end of September.  This premium golden beer is continuously hopped throughout fermentation with Citra for a juicy smack in the mouth flavour.  ‘We’re a big fan of single malt and single hop beers and this one is a cracker.  At 6.5% it tends to take a few scalps but it’s hard to resist after the first pint’

Fuggle Bunny Brewhouse

Fuggle Bunny Soapstar You may think Fuggle Bunny has been quiet of late……however quite the opposite we have been hopping all over the place.  We had raving reviews from our beers that were commissioned for the CLA game fair, with Angus the premium pale Ale beer being a real showstopper. Likewise Fuggle had a small acting part at the Emmerdale studios for Yorkshire Day, this was a great day out meeting the cast and crew, going behind the scenes especially at the Dingles bar…..and selling our wares, hopefully we may be having a visit from one of the cast shortly down at the Brewery at our Friday Fuggle club….watch this space. Back to reality we are busy creating Chapter 8 which will be out shortly.  We have created a special beer for the Fat Cat celebrating famous faces of Sheffield, Fuggles has been named Joe Cocker.  Look out for Fuggle at the Old Nags Head and the Old Hall Inn, also at the Norfolk Arms beer festival on Bank Holiday. fuggle sep15 We were very pleased to have been chosen to have the main pump clip on the bar at the new JDW The Steel Industry at Meadowhall so next time you are there pop in for a pint of Foundry Premium Pale Ale. Look out for Fuggles mobile bar on 6 September at the food festival at Creswell Crags.  There is so much more happening but I will leave it for now, keep hopping onto the website to find out more.

Dronfield Pub of the Season

The Coach & Horses on Sheffield Road, Dronfield, is a cosy little pub attached to Sheffield FC’s football ground. Sheffield FC hold the record of being the oldest established football league club in the world. The actual pub is operated by Thornbridge Brewery with the bar showcasing a selection of well kept examples of their beers, along with guest beers of a similar calibre. Coach & Horses Dronfield The team behind the bar, led by pub manager James Broad and Cellar Manager Ash create a friendly atmosphere throughout the pub, infectious enough for the musicians attending the regular Monday open mic jam night to form a band called ‘The Coachmen’ that went on to play festivals around the UK! Other regular events at the Coach include a quiz night on Sundays, with free chip butties for participants. The final piece in the jigsaw of success is the food, with ‘Chariot’s Kitchen’ serving quality home cooked food. Their new menu launches on 4th August, The presentation ceremony for the Summer “Pub of the Season Award”, voted for by Dronfield CAMRA members, will be held at  8:00 PM (for 8:30) at the Coach and Horses on Saturday 29th August. During the evening, Drone Valley Brewery will launch their third brew. As yet nameless, this will probably be a 4.8% pale ale based on either Amarillo or Galaxy hops. A free buffet will be provided courtesy of Chariots Kitchen.

Pub of the Month August 2015

Hidden away off West Street, the Red Deer on Pitt Street is approached via Mappin Street and is one of the gems of the City Centre real ale scene. Dating from the 1870’s, the pub originally comprised three small rooms with a central bar area. This was opened out in the 1980’s and the bar repositioned to provide the present format of an L-shaped lounge. The “gallery”, a raised area at the rear, was added in 1993 and this leads on to a beer garden. Formerly a Tetley pub, for many years in the early days of Sheffield CAMRA, the Red Deer was the regular meeting place for the branch, it being one of the few Sheffield pubs to retain handpumps. Jake Nickles took over the pub in August 2010, having previously worked in pubs and bars in London and the Midlands. By focusing on good customer service and increasing the choice of real ales he quickly re-established the pubs reputation as a quality showcase for cask beer. The bar displays an impressive range of handpumps, serving up to nine beers, currently always including Kelham Island Easy Rider, Moorhouse’s Pride of Pendle and Stancill No. 7 together with regularly changing guest beers including several from local independent breweries. A good selection of malt whiskies is also available. The pub opens 12.00 to 12.00 Monday to Thursday, 12.00 p.m. to 1.00 a.m. Friday/Saturday and 12.00 to 11.00 p.m. Sundays. Quality “pub grub” is available 12-3 and 5-9 p.m. weekdays and 12 to 9.00 p.m. Saturday/Sunday. Tuesday evenings there is a fairly challenging pub quiz, and regular live music Saturday nights and alternate Sundays Also on Sundays there’s a popular movie night held in the upstairs function room, alternating between sci-fi and arts films. The well-deserved Pub of the Month award will be presented on the evening of Tuesday 11 August 2015, when all are welcome to join us. An incentive for CAMRA members is a 5% discount on real ales, on production of a current membership card. Wils Gee

Welbeck Abbey Brewery

Here at Welbeck Abbey Brewery we’re elated to announce that our first pub, The Portland House, is currently being planned, prepped and polished ready for opening in August. Situated on Ecclesall Road in Sheffield, our little boozer will be entirely dedicated to ethically sourced food and drink with provenance; a fine balance between the heritage that comes with being part of the Welbeck Estate and the contemporary, industrial style that is synonymous with Sheffield. Heading up our newest venture will be no other than esteemed General Manager Tom Purcell previously of the University Arms, Sheffield. On the bar you’ll find a selection of Welbeck Abbey beer and also guest ales that we source from fellow brewers’ far and wide. With 6 hand-pulls, a selection of continental keg products plus lots of delicious spirits, wine and bottled beer we believe there really will be something for everyone. We’re very proud of our newest venture and we invite you all to come and visit us upon opening. Brewery Tours are still running on the second Monday of each month and the final tour will commence on Monday 14th September. Head brewer and one of few Brewster’s in the UK, Claire, takes you on a sensory journey and explains the brewing process from grain to pint. Tours start at 7:30pm and finish around 9pm costing just £7.50 per person. Tickets are available from the Welbeck Farm Shop or by contacting the brewery direct on 01909 512539. We look forward to seeing you. roman southwell archeology brew In other news we’re sponsoring the Roman Southwell Community Archaeology project and have brewed a beer with volunteers from the group in order to raise money for this great cause. The beer is called Gladiator and drinks at 3.8% ABV. Brewed with pale malts and entirely English hops for grassy notes and floral balance- we can all help raise money with 10 pence of each pint going straight to the charity to increase funds for their next stage in the dig. To find out more about the group, charity and Roman activity in Southwell visit their website: www.mbarchaeology.co.uk. Southwell food and drink pub The Hearty Goodfellow is heading up the campaign for us and this is one of the fine establishments where you will be able to do your bit in keeping history alive, whilst supping a delicious pint of English ale. On the not so distant horizon are a couple of items that we’re rather chuffed with at brewery HQ. Firstly we’re ecstatic to say that Welbeck Abbey keg lager Pivo will soon be coming to a pub near you! Brewed using Czech and Polish hops this 4.8% ABV crisp, clean, thirst quenching lager will be available very soon so keep your eyes peeled. Finally we’ve had a bash at brewing a beer in the style of a Belgian Dubbel , which we’ll be maturing in ex. wine casks in the tunnels that run underneath the abbey here at Welbeck. We’re looking to achieve between 6-7% ABV for this rich, dark libation. Upcoming Monthly Specials for July are out and about in a pub near you very soon:

Steel City snippets

Over the last few issues of Beer Matters, we have featured some of the volunteer staff roles at our Steel City Beer & Cider Festival. We are looking for as many of our members to help out as possible and the staffing form is now live on our website – sheffield.camra.org.uk. We’ve also mentioned sponsorship, corporate support and hospitality  – there are still some opportunities available – get in touch if you are interested in promoting your business at the festival. So we now turn to look at what is on offer for guests visiting the festival… The festival is split into various areas. Once you have passed the entry desk (where you pay your admission and pick up your glass) the choice is: Upper Hall – featuring the main real ale and cider bars, cold food stalls, CAMRA merchandise stall and the live music stage. Victorian Courtyard – featuring the hot food stalls and outdoor drinking area all atmospherically themed. Millowners Pub – a replica of a traditional local pub with local breweriana on display and a working bar featuring around 6 real ales. Marquee – the other main beer bar can be found here along with the CAMRA membership stall, games and seating. River Don Beam Engine Hall – additional indoor space is available for visitors here in the event of bad weather and on the Friday afternoon hopefully the museum staff will fire the steam powered beam engine up for a demonstration!
