Pub of the Year 2020 (City Centre)

Our Sheffield City Centre Pub of the Year is awarded to the Sheffield Tap. The Sheffield Tap was opened by Pivovar in 2009 in the railway station’s former first class refreshment room, which was built in 1904. After years of neglect the main bar area has been the subject of an award-winning restoration retaining many original features and is included on CAMRA’s National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors. Further seating has been provided in the entrance corridor and to the right of the bar.  A further room of seating is the impressive  former dining room, which is now home to the Tapped Brew Co’s on site brewery, which can be viewed through a glass screen. The Tap’s bar has 11 handpumps dispensing a range of cask beers including both on site brews and guest beers, alongside 14 keg taps and a fridge stuffed with around 200 beers in bottle and can – all served by knowledgeable staff. The Sheffield Tap is often described as a great place to miss a train! REOPENING… The Sheffield Tap are planning on reopening in a Covid-19 secure manner on Saturday 4th July with table service and an app available to order on. For more details check out their Facebook page.

Pub of the Year 2020 (Kelham Island)

Our Kelham Island Pub of the Year is awarded to the Kelham Island Tavern. Josh and Louise took over the running of this established real ale pub two years ago. It has won many awards over the years since reopening in its current guise. The winning formula continues with the basics of a clean and tidy pub with a civilised atmosphere, varied choice of well kept real ales at reasonable prices and a well tended beer garden, their stamp on the pub is very much evolution rather than revolution – for example they’ve had a bar refit to add more UK craft beer on tap alongside the real ales and European beers and they have upgraded the pub’s lunchtime food offering. The Kelham Island Tavern is currently open part time Wednesday to Saturday for take home beers (cask, keg, bottle and can) and snacks such as crisps and pork scratchings. Check their social media for current opening times and beer range.

Pub of the Year 2020 (South Sheffield)

Our South Sheffield Pub of the Year is awarded to the Sheaf View at Heeley. When current owner James Birkitt bought the pub in the year 2000, it was a failed and closed Marstons pub. Investment was made improving the interior and outdoor drinking area as well as adding an extension and it was reborn as a freehouse pub with a variety of reasonably priced real ales and European beers served by friendly staff. In the two decades since, the winning formula has changed very little – only noticeable differences are bar snacks such as sandwiches are now sold, some of the beers are always from Neepsend Brewery (same owners) and the keg taps have UK craft beers alongside the European imports.
  • At the moment the Sheaf View is open to collect take home beers on Fridays, these should be ordered in advance using their online form – check their Facebook page for details.
  • The pub is due to reopen on Tuesday 14th July with Covid-Safe arrangements in place including a one way system in, out and around the pub – see their Facebook page for more details.

Pub of the Year 2020 (North Sheffield)

Our North Sheffield Pub of the Year is awarded to the Gardeners Rest in Neepsend. When long standing owners and licencees Pat and Eddy retired and sold up, a whole bunch of regulars put money into a community enterprise (Gardeners Rest Community Society) that now operates the pub. As before it is a great real ale pub with a choice of rooms, bar billiards, traditional music performances and slightly eccentric riverside beer garden but the community element has been cranked up a notch or two which is reflected in the people working there and the groups using the  meeting room upstairs. The pub is currently opening part time (afternoons Wed-Sat) for take home beer sales, check their social media for current opening times and beer choices.

Pub of the Year 2020 (West Sheffield)

Our West Sheffield Pub of the Year is awarded to the Itchy Pig Ale House in Broomhill. This friendly micro-pub is a converted gift shop and offers five real ales along with a number of craft beers on keg taps. Many of the bar snacks are of a Porcine theme with pork scratchings and pork pies involved, hence the humorous name! The Itchy Pig is currently open selling beers to take home from 3pm to 5pm Tuesday to Sunday with home deliveries available locally those days from 5pm to 7pm (orders and enquires by email orders@theitchypig.co.uk).

Pub awards coming soon!

Some of you may remember we have some unfinished business celebrating pubs around our area that our members really like, with a number of awards due to be announced and presented back in April – except the Covid-19 lockdown shut all the pubs towards the end of March. It didn’t really feel appropriate to be celebrating closed pubs at the time, especially when the award winning publicans were worried they’d just lost their livelihood. There are still some serious issues about pubs surviving, such as pubs with high rateable values not qualifying for a government grant along with some property landlords and pub companies still demanding rent on a closed pub and nationally CAMRA is still working with various trade bodies on campaigns for those issues. Locally though, some pubs have been open part time for take home food and drink (we’ve listed all the ones we know of on WhatPub), some have taken the opportunity to get a refurbishment done and the signs are we are only now a few weeks away to some pubs being able to reopen, albeit with social distancing arrangements in force, so we think it is about time to start being positive about pubs again and looking forward to once again being able to drink in them! Over the next couple of weeks we’ll be announcing our Pub of the Year awards. Our members were invited to vote for their favourite pubs in each area of the Sheffield & District CAMRA branch area (North, South, West, City Centre, Kelham Island and Derbyshire) then our team of judges all individually visited each area winner to rate various aspects of the pub in order to declare an overall Sheffield Pub of the Year and District Pub of the Year. This was all concluded back in March. Before then there is also the matter of our April Pub of the Month award, voted for by our members, which hasn’t been presented yet. This will hopefully take place on Saturday, unfortunately we can’t go to the pub to see the presentation so we’ll be posting a short video online instead which you can watch at home with a beer (don’t forget a number of pubs and local breweries are doing off sales or home delivery!). Cheers!

Pub of the Month April 2020

All of us here at The Wisewood Inn would like to thank customers both old and new for continuously supporting us and watching us go from strength to strength in the last five years. Since re-opening our doors in October 2015, relaunching a pub that had struggled for at least ten years under various pubco ownerships, we have received lots of positive feedback and support from the community and it is an honour to win Sheffield CAMRA Pub of the Month twice in the last two years. Since winning Pub of the Month in July 2017, we have expanded and made lots of positive changes to create an even better environment. We now even have our very own on-site microbrewery – Loxley Brewery. With four cask pumps serving Loxley Brewery ales, there are also two guest pumps which are rotated frequently, these pumps have seen us support many fine local breweries and many more from further afield. (Around 400+ to date!!) The ‘Cellar Bar’ has also been refurbished to an exceptional standard and is the perfect place to grab a pint in the winter months with the real log fire and candlelight. In the summer months, our roller blinds are opened up on to one of the largest beer gardens in Sheffield and the spectacular views of the Loxley Valley surround. The Cellar Bar is also the perfect place to have a function of any kind – we cater for everyone! We have also undergone a kitchen extension, serving delicious homemade food every day of the week but our Sunday Roasts are a very popular hit, booking is a must almost every Sunday of the year. Another great achievement that we are very proud of is opening our second pub, The Raven Inn on Palm Street, Walkley, a cosy local also supported by Loxley Brewery and offering a diverse range of cask and keg. Looking to the future, there are plans to refurbish the upstairs bar in early Spring. We are expanding our beer lines during the refurb too, which is something for the ale lovers to look out for! There are talks of a new food menu too which will pair nicely with the new drinks on offer. As well as this, our second beer festival will be held in June this year, and after a great success last year we are really looking forward to this years event which we are sure will be bigger and better, with great beer, music and people – Keep your eyes peeled for updates in Beer Matters! A huge mention goes to our staff who work tirelessly to make sure our standards are as high as you expect. We invite friends old and new to join us on our presentation evening, on Tuesday 7th of April for a few beers, bar snacks and a celebration!

February Pub of the Month presented

Our chairman Glyn Mansell presented Bankers Draft shift manager Alex Crowe with our February Pub of the Month award, which he accepted on behalf of all the team at this Wetherspoons pub located in Sheffield City Centre by Castle Square tram stop. The award is voted for by our members and reflects the local managements passion for keeping a good range of well kept real ale and on the night they also hosted a meet the brewer event with Little Critters Brewery, which also featured a pop up bar with a selection of their beers – all at Wetherspoons affordable prices too!

Pub of the Month February 2020

JD Wetherspoon has come a long way since founder, Tim Martin, opened his first pub in Muswell Hill, London in 1979. More than 40 years later the estate boasts over 900 pubs spread the length and breadth of the UK. Success has been built on the provision of great value food and drink in a warm and friendly environment. From a real ale perspective this success is evidenced by the 250 pubs chosen by local branches for inclusion in the 2020 edition of the CAMRA GOOD BEER GUIDE. Sheffield got its first Wetherspoon pub in 1996 when the Bankers Draft opened at 1, Market Place on the site of the old Midland Bank building. This wasn’t a surprising location as the company is well-known for renovating and refurbishing old, and in many cases, historic buildings. The Banker’s soon became a popular place for friends to meet up in town. However, I believe that the pub has actually improved greatly in the last few years, especially since Jonathan Atkinson took charge. Jonathan and his partner, Terrianne McHale have been with the company for 15 years, the last 8 years at the Banker’s Draft. They are keen supporters of CAMRA. Local branch and nation and publications are prominently displayed in the pub. The venue has hosted branch meetings and has been a regular sponsor of the Sheffield Beer Festival. Regular real ales on the bar are Abbot Ale, Ruddles Bitter and Doom Bar. Additionally there are about 7 or 8 guest ales available at any time. These are dispensed from the 14 banks of hand pumps on the 2 floors. They always try to offer a range of styles, ABVs and a mix of local and national brews. There tends to be a regular seasonal ale. Favourite local breweries are Little Critters, Bradfield, Kelham Island, Milestone and Acorn. With the addition of Alex Crowe to the team the Banker’s is one of the few venues stocking Welbeck ales. In any case the pub is a go to venue for any new breweries in Sheffield. I know that Jonathan is very keen to increase the volume of real ale sold. To this end he has extended the normal company offer to CAMRA members by allowing an unlimited discount to card-carrying members. CAMRA is also an organisation that supports real cider. It is therefore very pleasing to find that apart from the Black Dragon on regular offer there are 5 guest still boxed ciders on at any time. These may include Broadoak Moonshine, Snails Bank Rhubarb and Monkey Mango. Given the overall success of JD Wetherspoon it is perhaps surprising that of their 9 pubs in Sheffield, opened at regular intervals since 1996, only one has ever been voted “Pub of the Month.” I am therefore delighted that the branch has chosen the Banker’s Draft as the winner of this prestigious award for February 2020. I know that Jonathan is too, and he hopes that as many branch members as possible come along on Tuesday, 11th February to join him and his team celebrate this success. Andrew Thorpe
