Beer Club

Our next Last Friday of the Month Beer Club on 25th September kicks off a weekend festival of music and World Cup rugby. Friday is a blues/folk acoustic night with the doors opening at 7.30pm. We’ve a couple of acts lined up and it should be an eclectic evening’s entertainment – a beatnik style return to great quality sounds. Saturday will feature the titanic clash between England v Wales in the World Cup rugby finals. We’ll have the big screen on and a wide range of beers available along with a guest ale. Doors open 4pm. All details are available on our Facebook page.

New Brews

Fresh Start Fresh Start 4.3%: We thought we’d brew a special for anyone contemplating a new start after their hols and to welcome all the new and returning students. This is generally a time for new beginnings whether young or old. Indeed, the arrival of the Freshers to Sheffield is always an exciting time and we warmly welcome everyone to this fair city. romeo - Copy (1) Romeo and Juliet 4.2%: Our other special is brewed once again especially to celebrate the Crucible Theatre’s production of the bard’s romantic tragedy. This raspberry flavoured slightly hoppy ale will be available at the Crucible bar and local pubs. It’s a delicious ale and is in limited supply so please get your orders in fast.

Abbeydale Brewery

Our first Catfest down at the Devonshire Cat 1st-4th October is a British hop festival supporting Blind Veterans UK charity. We have selected 24 casks that all feature British hops, so come down and se what our own soils can produce! We will certainly have a strong presence at the Steel City Beer Festival later in the month, you may well have started to spot our promotional beer mats around town. Not 100% sure which beers of our will make the list, but they are sure to be some of the following: los bancos ‘Los Bancos’ – 4.2% – Following the great reaction to our Masquerade, we have another beer in our Lost Treasure series. This beer features two glorious American hops Mosaic and Simcoe, for a wonderful fruity and refreshing bitter pale beer. staypuft ‘Hop Hideout Stout’ – 6.8% – Those of you familiar to the Abbeydale Road area will have certainly stumbled into Hop Hideout over the last year or so, and Jules and Will have been itching to brew a beer with us for ages, and we have eventually managed to find a time that works for us all! In a nod to a certain 80s movie monster, we have a strong robust stout brewed with Hazelnut, coffee and marshmallow flavours. ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ – 7.0% – More strong dark beer for you! When we brewed the ‘Bex’ earlier in the year with a specialist Belgian yeast strain, we were able to crop enough yeast for another brew. So John took it upon himself to brew a 7.0% Belgian style Dubbel back in June. This was then filled into seven of our wooden barriques and left to age in our cold store. However, each of the barriques had some different ingredients added to represent each of the deadly sins. Who will try them all? Envy, Gluttony, Greed, Lust, Pride, Sloth and Wrath. There will only be about 5 or 6 firkins of each Sin, so keep your eyes peeled! zombie chainsaw ‘Dr Morton’s Zombie Chainsaw’ – 4.1% – In preparation for Hallowe’en, we have a scary offering from the other good Doctor! Expect plenty in the way of fruity hop character, and a resounding bitter finish. Also keep your eyes peeled for another Hallowe’en beer called Cinder-hella which is our first attempt at a Pumpkin Spiced beer, more details in next month’s edition! Until then, mine’s a pint of Moonshine! Robin Baker

Steel City Brewing

Steel City’s latest brew The Light At The End Of The World sold out before the casks were filled – in fact when the last cask was filled there wasn’t so much as a pint leftover for ‘quality control’! Look out for it at the Shakespeare and at the Steel City Beer Festival (well when the festival’s named after the brewery it’d be rude not to…), and the festival special Chasing The Dragon which has added Komodo Dragon Chillies in the cask! The main brew will also be appearing at Nottingham Beer Festival (7-10 October) along with the chilli (Scotch Bonnets this time) and lime version Death In Fire, and a week later Wakefield Beer Festival will have a kiwi-fruit version. The final part of the unholy trinity of chillies is the Ghost Pepper version, Her Ghost In The Fog, which will be bottled and exclusive to Beer Central and Cotteridge Wines of Birmingham. TMB15 Light v2 Meanwhile, the ‘away collaboration’ at Landlocked, Stone Sour, is also out. There should be three different versions at Sheffield beer festival: the ‘base’ version which is a ‘straightforward’ lactic-mash sour beer, a version primary fermented with brettanomyces, and a version primary fermented with ‘normal’ yeast then reseeded with brettanomyces. Hopefully they should all taste very different despite only the yeast being different, and will provide an interesting contrast when tried side-by-side. The next brew, a home collaboration with Bridestones, is a tribute to Nightmare on Elm St creator Wes Craven, who passed away last month. In a pun worthy of Abbeydale, the guys have created a milk stout named Craven d’Ale. As well as lactose, the brew also features a generous quantity of malted oats and plenty of Bramling Cross hops. For a full breakfast stout a few casks will have coffee added to become Macchiato.

Welbeck Abbey Brewery

WA_Pivo We have brewed our first KEG LAGER! It’s called PIVO and drinks at 4.8% ABV. Crafted using Polish ‘Lubelski’ and Czech ‘Amethyst’ hops the flavour profile is completely different to that of the more main-stream lager brands. The hops we have chosen impart a subtle balance of earthy, herbal notes whilst providing a hint of citrus and spice to round things off. Available now! We have ovular and circular font badges so they should fit on any font. The kegs are one-way, 30L ‘ecokegs’, the product is ‘bright’ and a pale lager. We’re really excited about this so welcome any criticism you can offer be it good or bad news- we want to hear it!

Our First Bar

Big news! We’re currently planning the opening of our first bar. It is situated on Ecclesall Road in Sheffield and will be called Portland House. We’ve drafted in Tom Purcell (formerly of the University Arms) as General Manager; things are coming along nicely so watch this space for more developments!

August Specials

Tan Gallops 4.6% American style IPA. This ale honours Welbeck’s racehorse pedigree and the famous ‘Tan Gallops’ training run. Big and full of American hops this beer promises pine, spice and all things nice! Four different American hops have gone into this ale which will have a good citrus kick and fruit flavour to back up the pine and spice notes. Strath Royal 4.2% English Pale Ale. Another horsey beer! This time celebrating one of Welbeck’s most famous Derby winners. English ‘Bramling Cross’ hops give this EPA a lovely blackcurrant fruit note yet it’s perfectly balanced by herbal tones and a little spice. Dry to the last sip with great bitterness. Henrietta Grande 4.0% Delicate Golden Ale. Henrietta Grande is a punchier version of our bestseller- Henrietta. Think grassy, slightly floral and golden with a hint of orange. Very quaffable!

In a nod to the start of the Rugby World Cup that is about to start in a few weeks, we will launch the latest in our British hop Albion series, with ‘Elgar’ featuring Minstrel hops. At 4.2% this session pale will showcase this lovely British hop that gives a herbal aroma with hints of orange and spiced berries on the palate. There should also be another Signature series beer launched before the return of Dr Morton’s Chicken Vindaloo towards the end of the month!

Steel City Brewing

Steel City have given the politics a break and gone back to their more usual music references with The Light At The End Of The World (a long-overdue My Dying Bride reference). This is a ‘typical’ Steel City Transatlantic Pale Ale, using Low Colour Maris Otter and a bit of Wheat Malt in the mash, with Columbus for bittering followed by Mosaic and Rakau for flavour and aroma. As is becoming the norm, there will be a chilli version, in this case for Nottingham beer festival and named Death In Fire (from the Amon Amarth song, obviously, sure you’re all familiar with it!). A bottled chilli version is also planned, Her Ghost In The Fog (Cradle of Filth this time), with a Ghost Pepper in every bottle! The next collaboration is ‘away’ at Landlocked in Ripley. Details still to be confirmed, but Dave is rather happy at the prospect of finally getting to brew a sour beer (being a cuckoo brewer, their hosts probably wouldn’t thank them for introducing lactobacillus and brettanomyces to the brewery!). The ‘base’ beer, working title Stone Sour, is a pale greengage sour, then numerous variants are planned with different fruits. At least a couple of variants will be available at the Steel City beer festival in October, and hopefully also at Wakefield beer festival the weekend before.

Thornbridge Brewery

Thornbridge beers are gaining popularity worldwide with exports growing in over 30 countries during the past 5 years.  And as the number of their international beer fans grow “Partnerships, says Simon Webster, Thornbridge’s Chief Operating Officer, with importers and those managing bars that stock Thornbridge are crucial to ensure our beers reach the drinker in the best of condition”. Thornbridge Paul Leeyen and Simon Webster Thornbridge Den Bosch Logo 01 Paul  Leeyen has been stocking Thornbridge beers for 3 years at his bar in Den Bosch in the Netherlands and has been  delighted with the response from his customers “high quality and a great variety of beer styles sets Thornbridge amongst the top breweries we deal with. Working with them and their importer Bier&cO has been a really positive experience”. Paul has been so delighted with his Thornbridge partnership that he approached the brewery about the idea of opening a Thornbridge Bar in Den Bosch. “After visiting the brewery in late 2014 I was blown away by the passion for their beers that everyone at Thornbridge demonstrated. I knew that if I could find the correct site in ’s-Hertogenbosch  then a Thornbridge bar would be a great success”. After months of looking for the right site Paul has now found one and has been busy working with Thornbridge and Bier&cO with an aim of opening the Thornbridge@’s-Hertogenbosch on the 4th September. Webster is excited by the concept “it really continues what we have been doing in the UK and on export – find and work with people who are as passionate about beer as we are and have skills that complement what we wish to do with Thornbridge beers. In Bier and Co we have an experienced importer and likewise with Paul. When we visited his current bar in ’s-Hertogenbosch, we knew our beers are in safe hands. So when he approached us to develop the Thornbridge Bar it excited us and it has been a lot of fun planning what we are sure will be a great success”.

Great Taste Awards 2015; Jaipur and Halcyon voted in the top 50 UK Food and Drinks We are very excited to have received 5 awards for our beers at the Great Taste Awards 2015! Great Taste Award Winning Beers The awards are held annually and known as ‘the acknowledged benchmark for fine food and drink’ with the judging administered by a panel of over 400, including well-known and very well respected specialists. Only around 1 percent of entrants receive a prestigious ‘3 stars’ at the awards and both Jaipur, for the second year running, and Halcyon, a new entry, were awarded this accolade. Alongside this we picked up ‘1 star’ for Wild Raven, Otto and Saint Petersburg rounding out an overall great result for us from the awards this year. All of the winners then proceeded to the next stage where the ‘Top 50 Winners’ were selected, both Jaipur and Halcyon made the cut and were named as two of the fifty best food and drink products in the UK! We are very proud that our beers have been recognised at the Great Taste Awards and this brings us up to 20 awards since we started entering in 2011. Having our beers acknowledged in this way by a range of experts from across the food and drinks industry helps to show the wide appeal of our beers.
