Exit 33 Brewing

Exit 33 Brewing are introducing a new range of special beers under the banner Club 33.  ‘The idea for the beer series came from our recent trip to the Oregon Brewers Festival in Portland after a brew day with Lucky Lab Brew Co.  We love playing with recipes and brewing one offs specials. The Club 33 beers will never be repeated and will always be full on in terms of flavour’ The much-awaited return of our strong beer Citra SMaSH is due at the end of September.  This premium golden beer is continuously hopped throughout fermentation with Citra for a juicy smack in the mouth flavour.  ‘We’re a big fan of single malt and single hop beers and this one is a cracker.  At 6.5% it tends to take a few scalps but it’s hard to resist after the first pint’

Fuggle Bunny Brewhouse

Fuggle Bunny Soapstar You may think Fuggle Bunny has been quiet of late……however quite the opposite we have been hopping all over the place.  We had raving reviews from our beers that were commissioned for the CLA game fair, with Angus the premium pale Ale beer being a real showstopper. Likewise Fuggle had a small acting part at the Emmerdale studios for Yorkshire Day, this was a great day out meeting the cast and crew, going behind the scenes especially at the Dingles bar…..and selling our wares, hopefully we may be having a visit from one of the cast shortly down at the Brewery at our Friday Fuggle club….watch this space. Back to reality we are busy creating Chapter 8 which will be out shortly.  We have created a special beer for the Fat Cat celebrating famous faces of Sheffield, Fuggles has been named Joe Cocker.  Look out for Fuggle at the Old Nags Head and the Old Hall Inn, also at the Norfolk Arms beer festival on Bank Holiday. fuggle sep15 We were very pleased to have been chosen to have the main pump clip on the bar at the new JDW The Steel Industry at Meadowhall so next time you are there pop in for a pint of Foundry Premium Pale Ale. Look out for Fuggles mobile bar on 6 September at the food festival at Creswell Crags.  There is so much more happening but I will leave it for now, keep hopping onto the website to find out more.

True North Brewing Co

After brewing out of a few different local breweries for the past couple of years, exciting times are ahead for True North Brewing Co. We have recently purchased our own 10bbl kit and last week picked up the keys to our new city centre brewery site which will both house the Brewery and Tap House. truenorth_logo_mono Earlier this year we were joined by new head brewer Bob Phaff, who returned to Sheffield after running his own award winning Scottish Brewery. We recently launched 6 core range beers as well as collaboration brews with Thornbridge Brewery and Black Iris Brewery. As well as brewing the official Tramlines Festival Ale, Tramlines Golden. Our beers can currently be found across all the Forum Cafe Bars sites, including The Broadfield, The York, The Old House, The Forum, The Common Room, The British Oak in Mosborough and The Crown & Anchor in Barugh Green. Welbeck Abbey Brewery

Here at Welbeck Abbey Brewery we’re elated to announce that our first pub, The Portland House, is currently being planned, prepped and polished ready for opening in August. Situated on Ecclesall Road in Sheffield, our little boozer will be entirely dedicated to ethically sourced food and drink with provenance; a fine balance between the heritage that comes with being part of the Welbeck Estate and the contemporary, industrial style that is synonymous with Sheffield. Heading up our newest venture will be no other than esteemed General Manager Tom Purcell previously of the University Arms, Sheffield. On the bar you’ll find a selection of Welbeck Abbey beer and also guest ales that we source from fellow brewers’ far and wide. With 6 hand-pulls, a selection of continental keg products plus lots of delicious spirits, wine and bottled beer we believe there really will be something for everyone. We’re very proud of our newest venture and we invite you all to come and visit us upon opening. Brewery Tours are still running on the second Monday of each month and the final tour will commence on Monday 14th September. Head brewer and one of few Brewster’s in the UK, Claire, takes you on a sensory journey and explains the brewing process from grain to pint. Tours start at 7:30pm and finish around 9pm costing just £7.50 per person. Tickets are available from the Welbeck Farm Shop or by contacting the brewery direct on 01909 512539. We look forward to seeing you. roman southwell archeology brew In other news we’re sponsoring the Roman Southwell Community Archaeology project and have brewed a beer with volunteers from the group in order to raise money for this great cause. The beer is called Gladiator and drinks at 3.8% ABV. Brewed with pale malts and entirely English hops for grassy notes and floral balance- we can all help raise money with 10 pence of each pint going straight to the charity to increase funds for their next stage in the dig. To find out more about the group, charity and Roman activity in Southwell visit their website: www.mbarchaeology.co.uk. Southwell food and drink pub The Hearty Goodfellow is heading up the campaign for us and this is one of the fine establishments where you will be able to do your bit in keeping history alive, whilst supping a delicious pint of English ale. On the not so distant horizon are a couple of items that we’re rather chuffed with at brewery HQ. Firstly we’re ecstatic to say that Welbeck Abbey keg lager Pivo will soon be coming to a pub near you! Brewed using Czech and Polish hops this 4.8% ABV crisp, clean, thirst quenching lager will be available very soon so keep your eyes peeled. Finally we’ve had a bash at brewing a beer in the style of a Belgian Dubbel , which we’ll be maturing in ex. wine casks in the tunnels that run underneath the abbey here at Welbeck. We’re looking to achieve between 6-7% ABV for this rich, dark libation. Upcoming Monthly Specials for July are out and about in a pub near you very soon:

Abbeydale Brewery

Huge thank you to all those who came out to support SunFest once again! It just keeps on getting better and better each year! We will announce shortly how much we managed to raise for JBMF, so keep you eyes peeled on our website and also jbmf.co.uk. I think we will sit down for a moment before we start planning next year’s festival which will be the 10th! Abbeydale Belfry pump clip Talking of beer festivals, anyone heading down to London for GBBF can sample our Belfry. We have had to re-brew a small batch just for the festival, but I’m sure a few casks will find their way out into the local trade! Abbeydale Dr Morton Insane Root pump clip In other beer news this month, we are making a few beers with different types of barley other than Low Colour Marris Otter’.  Golden Promise malt will feature in Dr Morton’s Insane Root and give a more golden colour with a bit more sweetness. Expect plenty of hop character from the Australian hops, Galaxy and Vic Secret. Bold tropical and citrus fruit flavours come to the fore coupled with a lasting bitter finish. Transformation has been brought back from the brew books and makes it first appearance for three years! A trio of hops from the US, Australia and New Zealand give tropical fruit flavours and zesty aromas. The use of Pearl malt gives more subtle toffee notes than our normal pale ales. Look out for another signature beer to follow Bex and Gazmalti (we promise they won’t all be 6.0%!) and a Dr Morton’s Transfers for China toward the end of the month!

Steel City Brewing

Steel City’s latest brew is another tongue-in-cheek political reference, referencing the suggestion the ECB print future Euro banknotes on Greece-Proof Paper. The beer itself is a pale hoppy brew around 4%, with a selection of US hops – varieties not known at time of writing, but expect big tropical and citrus fruit flavours and a bitter finish. Look out for it at the usual suspects. TMB14 Greece-Proof Dry-hopping is soooo 2012, so once again a chilli version has been produced. Fire Galore takes its name from a Deathstars track, and features a handful of Scotch Bonnets in the cask, just enough for the lemony flavour to come through and just a slight kick from the capsaicin (note that ‘slight’ is in the words of Dave, who also reckons his beers are ‘slightly’ bitter!).

Drone Valley Community Brewery

Establishment of the brewery is well under way to make the brewery a fully-fledged community benefit society.  This means that surplus profits to be donated to local good causes. Another brew has been produced courtesy of Barlow Brewery following the fantastic success of the society’s first brew, a 5.2% IPA, which was very well received locally.  Look out for Gosforth Gold – a new recipe of Dave McLaren (ex-Spire Brewery). The brewing process has been filmed by a Drone Valley Brewery member, Hannah Lister, and the footage should now be available on the website  – www.dronevalleybrewery.com. The management committee recently visited Hesket Newmarket Brewery in Cumbria which has similar aims in benefiting the community. Their staff kindly imparted a great deal of useful advice as well as a taste of their lovely beer. The one thing that remains elusive is premises. The search goes on in Dronfield but any suggestions from Beer Matters readers will be gratefully received. Meanwhile, the membership stands at 80+ people. If you want to get involved in the brewing or invest in the society, please get in touch by email – letsgetdronfieldbrewing@gmail.com

Exit 33

At a recent charity quiz night at The Harlequin, Annie Stoker won a brew day experience at Exit 33.  She brewed a special Charity Pale Ale and the brewery will make a cash donation to local youth homeless charity Roundabout for every pint sold (Annie is pictured adding a hop charge to the brew). Exit 33 Charity Brew Day The monthly special for August is Summer Breeze, described as a 4.3% refreshing pale session ale.  Just the thing on a hot day!
