Pub of the Year 2020

Our overall Sheffield Pub of the Year, chosen by the judges from the area winners voted for by our members, is the Kelham Island Tavern. The pub was rescued from dereliction in 2002 and firmly established as a popular real ale pub with the back room added as an extension to cope! The Kelham has two rooms and impressive little beer garden at the rear whilst the bar offers up to 12 well kept cask beers with an effort made to ensure variety of styles, all at fair prices. A simple food menu is served at lunchtime every day except Sunday. Josh and Louise took over the pub two years ago and has not only maintained the established standards but made some subtle improvements too! Congratulations to both on the award! PUB REOPENING With the easing of the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, the Kelham Island Tavern will reopen on Saturday 4th July with limited capacity in the pub and beer garden. New reduced opening hours will operate – 2pm to 8pm for seated customers, with takeaway drinks available 3pm-7pm. Check their Facebook page for more information.

Pub of the Year 2020 (Sheffield District)

Our District Pub of the Year is awarded to the Anglers Rest in Bamford. The Anglers Rest was under threat a few years ago when the pub company that owned it decided to sell and there was a proposal to convert it into residential use, leaving the village with no pub and little other facilities.  However thanks to it being listed as an asset of community value, locals were able to get together to form a community enterprise to buy and operate the pub, which is also now home to the village post office and coffee shop, keeping those facilities for this rural community. The pub itself is comfortable and friendly, offers a selection of real ales including some from local breweries and serves meals and also hosts various events. PUB REOPENING During lockdown the Post Office remains open and the pub/cafe is operating as a takeaway and shop. The pub will be reopening to enjoy food and drink on the premised from Monday 6th July with reduced hours and Covid-19 secure service. Check their Facebook page for latest news and details of this.

Pub of the Year 2020 (City Centre)

Our Sheffield City Centre Pub of the Year is awarded to the Sheffield Tap. The Sheffield Tap was opened by Pivovar in 2009 in the railway station’s former first class refreshment room, which was built in 1904. After years of neglect the main bar area has been the subject of an award-winning restoration retaining many original features and is included on CAMRA’s National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors. Further seating has been provided in the entrance corridor and to the right of the bar.  A further room of seating is the impressive  former dining room, which is now home to the Tapped Brew Co’s on site brewery, which can be viewed through a glass screen. The Tap’s bar has 11 handpumps dispensing a range of cask beers including both on site brews and guest beers, alongside 14 keg taps and a fridge stuffed with around 200 beers in bottle and can – all served by knowledgeable staff. The Sheffield Tap is often described as a great place to miss a train! REOPENING… The Sheffield Tap are planning on reopening in a Covid-19 secure manner on Saturday 4th July with table service and an app available to order on. For more details check out their Facebook page.

Neepsend Brew Co

Neepsend Brew Co has been shut and not trading through most of the Covid-19 lockdown but are in their new brewery and preparing to be up and running again. Next week sees beer available to the trade, coinciding with some pubs reopening, but the big news is that Neepsend beer is now available in cans and will be sold direct to the public online, as well as via independent bottle shops such as Mitchells Wine Merchants at Meadowhead. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for the latest news!

Pub of the Year 2020 (Kelham Island)

Our Kelham Island Pub of the Year is awarded to the Kelham Island Tavern. Josh and Louise took over the running of this established real ale pub two years ago. It has won many awards over the years since reopening in its current guise. The winning formula continues with the basics of a clean and tidy pub with a civilised atmosphere, varied choice of well kept real ales at reasonable prices and a well tended beer garden, their stamp on the pub is very much evolution rather than revolution – for example they’ve had a bar refit to add more UK craft beer on tap alongside the real ales and European beers and they have upgraded the pub’s lunchtime food offering. The Kelham Island Tavern is currently open part time Wednesday to Saturday for take home beers (cask, keg, bottle and can) and snacks such as crisps and pork scratchings. Check their social media for current opening times and beer range.

Find pub re-openings on whatpub.com

With the government announcing that pubs can reopen if they wish from Saturday 4th July, subject to being set up to operate in a Covid-19 secure manner, our volunteers are busy updating CAMRA’s online pub guide whatpub.com with details of all the pubs we are aware of that are reopening soon and/or selling food and drink to take home. Pubs and bars won’t be the same when they first reopen and not all pubs will be reopening straight away. The government guidelines require 1 metre social distancing arrangements, table service, enhanced hygiene processes and more to ensure the safety of both staff and customers. This will mean you must have a table – no propping up the bar or standing around – and if no tables are free you will need to queue outside. Some pubs will require you to make a table reservation before going (don’t forget to cancel the reservation if you change your mind!). When planning to go to the pub with friends, don’t forget there are still Covid-19 restrictions in force about who you meet – indoors it is a maximum of two different households whilst outdoors it can be up to six. Many pubs have been making improvements to their outdoor drinking area ahead of reopening which may be something to look forward to seeing! Where possible we have included brief details on whatpub.com about how the pub will be operating when it reopens or alternatively a link to the pub’s social media or website to check the details before setting out. Note there are some pubs that have been doing take home sales and/or home delivery during lockdown and this is shown on whatpub.com, some may continue to offer these facilities going forward. The CAMRA Brew2You app and website will also continue to take orders for participating pubs, breweries and cider makers offering click and collect or home delivery. If you are a publican and details of your pub haven’t been updated on whatpub.com please use the “submit update” link on its page and fill the form in, we will try and get the update done as soon as possible. If you are a publican or brewer wishing to sign up to sell on Brew2You visit the website and follow the “become a partner” link. GETTING TO THE PUB Buses and trams are running to an amended timetable which you can find at https://travelsouthyorkshire.com/en-GB/LandingPage/service-changes. The government have made face coverings mandatory for passengers on public transport (if you don’t have a mask then a scarf will do, as long as your nose and mouth is covered). Don’t worry about bus drivers not wearing a mask – they are sat behind a perspex screen and will be able to concentrate on driving safely! Social distancing arrangements are in place on board (avoid using seats marked out of use) which has reduced capacity significantly so you are advised to travel at less busy times wherever possible. Evenings and Sundays are generally quiet. First and Stagecoach buses have set up their apps to show how busy a bus is expected to be whilst Supertram has a guide on their website. You are also asked to avoid paying for tickets by cash  if possible – First, Stagecoach and Powells take contactless card payment with online sales for daily and weekly passes also available. If you must pay by cash then exact change is now required. Taxis also continue to operate, note UBER are applying the same rule as public transport regarding face coverings.

Pub of the Year 2020 (South Sheffield)

Our South Sheffield Pub of the Year is awarded to the Sheaf View at Heeley. When current owner James Birkitt bought the pub in the year 2000, it was a failed and closed Marstons pub. Investment was made improving the interior and outdoor drinking area as well as adding an extension and it was reborn as a freehouse pub with a variety of reasonably priced real ales and European beers served by friendly staff. In the two decades since, the winning formula has changed very little – only noticeable differences are bar snacks such as sandwiches are now sold, some of the beers are always from Neepsend Brewery (same owners) and the keg taps have UK craft beers alongside the European imports.
  • At the moment the Sheaf View is open to collect take home beers on Fridays, these should be ordered in advance using their online form – check their Facebook page for details.
  • The pub is due to reopen on Tuesday 14th July with Covid-Safe arrangements in place including a one way system in, out and around the pub – see their Facebook page for more details.

Abbeydale Brewery

Here at Abbeydale Brewery, despite challenges to our business and putting in place substantial changes to overcome them, we are doing everything we can to retain a sense of familiarity in the “new normal” we all need to learn to live with. Our brewteam haven’t stopped throughout the lockdown period – although we did quieten down in April and May, we have now increased production again and are getting plenty of lovely fresh beer ready for the proposed pubs opening date of 4 th July. Alongside this, you may have spotted that we were very fortunate to receive delivery of our very own canning line a couple of months ago. We were able to get to grips with this in super quick time, so we’ve got a great selection of cans at the moment, including Moonshine and Absolution, two of our popular core range which were both previously only available in cask. (Our best bitter Daily Bread is being added to this selection in the next week too!) Specials wise, these will mainly be released in keg and can initially whilst we get stocks of our core cask range nice and healthy, but coming up over the next few weeks we have Hop Smash Grapefruit IPA, and a couple of new Funk Dungeon releases too – a Tradition single hopped Bretted pale, and a tart lager. Plus a planned brand new Lost Souls imperial stout, this time inspired by the flavours of a Russian Honeycake! Sadly we have had to announce that we have taken the incredibly difficult decision not to re-open our city centre pub, The Devonshire Cat, as an Abbeydale Brewery pub. It’s been a huge part of who we are over the past six and a half years, and we will miss it immensely. However we’re cautiously optimistic about the Rising Sun, Nether Green, and this will be opening on Saturday 4 th July with a robust plan in place, do keep an eye on their website and social media for further details. We are planning to continue our online shop operation and direct delivery alongside supplying pubs of course, and would just like to quickly take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all the Sheffielders (and beyond!) who have supported us over these turbulent few months. We’ve gone through literally thousands of minikegs on top of our cans too! We genuinely couldn’t have got through this without you all, and we hope you will continue to stay with us as we all ride out this storm together. Hope to see plenty of you for a real life handpulled pint, from a safe distance of course, down the pub. It’s been a long time coming, and we’ve missed it so much! Cheers Laura, Abbeydale Brewery

Devonshire Cat

Statement from Abbeydale Brewery: It is with great sadness that we must announce that the Devonshire Cat will not be re-opening as an Abbeydale Brewery pub. With the underlying trend of a reduction in footfall over the past years it has become increasingly challenging to run the Devonshire Cat as a viable business. This is despite every effort made by our team to make it a warm and welcoming venue with a fantastic food and drink offering, and we’re hugely proud of what we were able to achieve in our little corner of Sheffield. It is, therefore, inevitable that the Covid-19 outbreak has had a devastating effect on the viability of this business. Unfortunately, the rateable value of our city centre venue was too high to benefit from the grants offered at this time. Given the uncertainty surrounding the future of the hospitality industry and the prospect of long term changes to social interaction, we have come to the decision that we are not in a position to re-open. We would like to take this opportunity of recognising the efforts of our truly dedicated and hardworking staff members and we are now focussed on supporting those who are impacted by this course of events. We have ensured that all of the local suppliers and breweries that worked with us before the country-wide closure in March have been paid. We will miss the Devonshire Cat so much, and wish to thank all of our customers over the years for their amazing support. We are disappointed not to have the opportunity to have a proper goodbye but would love to see all of you up at the Rising Sun, which will continue to represent Abbeydale Brewery into the future.

Covid-19 – Grant Schemes

In late May, Sheffield CAMRA wrote to local councils regarding the Government funded Small Business Grant Fund and the Retail and Hospitality Grant Scheme, encouraging them to try to ensure that this support reaches every pub and club possible to help make sure they are still there when we can visit again. We received a very positive response from Sheffield City Council: ‘if you are aware of any Pubs in Sheffield that might be eligible but have yet to submit details I would recommend that you urge them to do so. The grant funding is for eligible businesses in need of support and we want to make sure they get what they need.’ – Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business & Investment Hence, we then emailed every pub/club in our branch area for whom we have an email address supplying them with a link to an exploratory letter located on our website. This email was sent on 31st.May. By the end of the day 82 recipients had followed up the link, a subsequent 178 following. We are very pleased with this level of response – many recipients would have already applied for the grant while, to others, it would be seen as a possible opportunity. We believe that a number of local pubs/clubs have received funding as a result of our urging. As of 23rd.June, in Sheffield, of an available £113,068,000, 7577 local businesses have claimed £90,050,000. On 17th.May, the number of successful applications was 6677. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-grant-funding-local-authority-payments-to-small-and-medium-businesses Dave Pickersgill
